Color in Marquise Diamonds
The apparent color in any diamond is reduced in areas where light is returned efficiently. As fancy cut diamonds can not return light evenly due to their geometry certain areas will almost invariably show more color than other areas.
An extreme of this can be seen in this natural J color marquise:
The above example clearly illustrates how light return reduces apparent color in the middle of the diamond. This phenomenon makes it possible to choose lower (worse) color grades when choosing a round diamond provided the diamond is cut to ideal standards and returns light efficiently, but it means that fancy cuts such as marquise cut diamonds with lower color grades will likely have areas in which the color is not masked. For this reason I have included diamonds from the “colorless” color grades of D to F as the top choices, but I have also included the best VRAI diamond I could find, though some color will have to be tolerated if this diamond is chosen. VRAI/Diamond Foundry diamonds can look amazing, but for the most part they are not “colorless”. See:
